The devs should have added a few default phantoms that start with you, even in a temple that pelo other player has visited before, just to at least give the illusion that the phantom gimmick is working, and maybe makes the player feel a sense of danger as more and more of these phantoms die off.

There's also a daily run, procedurally generated Abyss Mode, and an Adventure Mode to get a little bit of story in there. You can even find temples your friends have run and see special highlights of their phantoms.
It may help you tackle some vertical challenges, navigate tall rooms, and reach ceiling treasure chambers, but those rooms are few and far-between compared to the more "horizontal" challenges, and all of these can still be easily cleared with your whip and any of the movement blessings above.
